Steps
- Install the Video Compressor app for Mac
- Import your MOV file (H.264 or H.265)
- Choose MP4 output and adjust resolution/bitrate
- Preview and click Compress
Recommended approach
- Downscale to 1080p/720p where appropriate
- Lower bitrate until preview remains crisp
Export
Click Compress. The app shows estimated savings before you start.
Spot heavy files
If a short clip has an unusually large file size, it likely uses a very high bitrate. Lowering bitrate or downscaling resolution typically provides the biggest savings.
Quality checks
Pay attention to gradients, screen recordings, and thin lines. If you notice banding or shimmering, increase the bitrate slightly until the preview looks clean.
